Born into a musical family and raised in San Antonio, Texas, Byrd began studying piano at age eight, later training on saxophone before discovering his primary voice on bass guitar as a teenager. His musicianship was deeply shaped by church-based music environments, where he developed a strong foundation in piano, organ, bass, and ensemble performance rooted in groove, harmony, and expressive collaboration.
Byrd has performed with and served as music director for nationally recognized and Grammy-winning artists, including Paul Brown, David Wells, Ben Tankard, and William Beckmann. His performance and production credits span live touring, broadcast recordings, and studio work, including contributions as an audio engineering editor on the Kanye West Sunday Service Choir Christmas album.
As a songwriter and producer, Byrd co-wrote and produced the award-recognized song “The Call,” performed by Isabel Davis, which received Grammy Award consideration, earned a Stellar Gospel Award, and was selected for the WOW Gospel compilation. His original compositions and productions are available on all major streaming platforms, including his debut solo album Unspeakable Joy (2012).
Byrd has extensive experience as a music director, most notably leading a 12-piece band and orchestra for Cornerstone Church (San Antonio) from 2017–2024, producing weekly live services reaching over 8,000 in-person attendees and 50,000+ online viewers. His work includes arranging, orchestration, rehearsal direction, and preparing production-ready stems using modern live-production workflows such as Ableton Live.
His creative work also extends into film and media, including composing the original score for Three Verses, a short film released by the American Film Institute (AFI). In addition to performing and producing, Byrd is committed to education and mentorship, having served as a certified educator and continuing to teach and mentor musicians through private instruction and digital platforms.
